According to a November 2005 Harvard Health Publication online
article, a sauna’s dry heat has “profound effects on the body.” In part, those include an increase in skin
temperature, an increase in pulse rate which allows the heart to pump nearly
double the amount of blood each minute, and causing the average person to pour
out nearly a pint of sweat during a short time spent in the sauna.
More about the Sauna
More on how these changes experienced
in the sauna could influence a person’s health was explained in the November
issue of the Harvard Men’s Health Watch by its editor-in chief, Dr. Harvey
Simon.
According to Dr. Simon, saunas seem
safe for the body, all in all, and noting that in his opinion, they have health
benefits which may not go beyond a feeling of well-being and relaxation. He also made some suggestions for sauna users
to avoid medications and alcohol before and after sauna use, as those could
impair sweating and result in overheating.
He further suggested a person not stay in the sauna for more than 15-20
minutes at a stint, and to cool-down gradually after using the sauna. He additionally recommended a person drink
two to four glasses of cool water after time spent in the sauna.
While the benefits of a feeling of well-being
and relaxation identified by Dr. Simon definitely have worth and value, there
are additional benefits which specific sauna treatment offers a person, the
Hubbard Detoxification Program, also known as the New-Life Detoxification or
Narconon Sauna Program.
Sauna Treatment Offers other Benefits
Overcoming Addiction
One of the most important and life-changing benefits of
sauna treatment is that of helping a drug addicted individual to get off and
stay off of drugs and/or alcohol.
Dr. David Root, MD, MPH (Master of Public Health), Occupational
Medicine Specialist, has used the Hubbard Detoxification Program in his office
for more than nineteen years. He states
that it is by far the best program
anywhere for helping addicts come-off and stay off of their drugs.
He further explains that the Hubbard Detoxification Program
is designed to reduce the burden of drugs in the body, and by doing so, reduces
the tendency of the individuals to return to drug use again.
Improving
Health and Quality of Life
Another vital and life-changing benefit of sauna treatment
is that of improving the health of those exposed to toxicants, such as the New
York City workers were in the 911 destruction of the World Trade Towers and the
consequent release of highly toxic particles and contaminants.
The Townsend Letter,
The Examiner of Alternative Medicine, April 2006 # 273, reviewed the
results of the Use of the Hubbard Sauna
Detoxification Regimen to Improve the Health Status of New York City Rescue
Workers Exposed to Toxicants.
While the review is extensive and in some instances quite technical,
it notes that a majority of the rescue workers seeking sauna treatment were
concerned that the health problems which they were suffering as a result of
their exposure to the 911 toxicants might force them to leave their jobs. Further, that the anxieties regarding their
health was compounded by the consequent financial concerns and by their
determination to continue working on their jobs, not mentioning their symptoms.
And while numerous benefits are statistically documented and
can be read and viewed by studying the paper directly, what may be most
important are the very human and real-world benefits documented for these
rescue workers overall. To wit, the
Hubbbard Sauna Detoxification regimen “greatly reduced” the number of days on
the job missed due to illness, and “resolved anxieties” that rescue worker’s careers
would be ended prematurely by disability retirement.
